  • Thanks so much, Ben!

  • Hi, Ben -

I have found a seamstress in downtown PHX but would be interested in your recommendation as a back up.

    Many thanks - Kathy F
  • Yeah, I'll still put in the chick order if people want birds in the fall, but man... no meat chicks for me, that was rough. I did a quail the week prior and that wasn't bad but for some reason those chickens really traumatized us. Also, it was physically much more challenging and time consuming than I expected. Also, when people tell you that they smell way worse, that's really not an adequate description of how much worse they smell....
I think I'll just stick with fish.
  • How early of varieties did you plant? This heatwave has done a number on mine as well. I have about 35 plants now, only two of which are hybrids, and those hybrids are doing TERRIBLE compared to my heirlooms. So I'm having the opposite results, my neighbor did about 50/50 and his heirlooms are also way outperforming the hybrids. Most of mine are cherry tomatoes, and I tried to not plant anything that was more than about 75 days. I wish I would have planted more 'table' heirlooms, then we could probably have a better comparison.
  • The variety of banana is "Ice Cream". It is supposed to get about 15 feet tall and the fruit is supposed to taste like ice cream or vanilla custard.
  • Hi Ben!

It is indeed a small world! One of my son's friends lives on the same street as Greg from the Urban Farm - I just found that out a short while ago. And then a few days later I see your name on the Brixen's guest list.
Bummer, I missed the opportunity to chat with you and your wife. I love your pictures - your backyard looks great. We are still in a trial-and-error phase with our gardening. One season we have a great harvest of squash, the next it won't grow. At least the one thing we can count on to flourish are our citrus trees. Only a few weeks ago I installed some permaculture beds the Garden Guy recommends (layers of blood meal, compost, newspaper and straw). Hopefully that will help us increase out yield this year.
Well, maybe we'll get to meet you one of these days. Take care!
  • Ben, sorry I didn't introduce myself at jennifers. It was nice to meet you. Do you still only have one laying hen? Two weeks feels like forever when you are waiting for something like that, but it really isn't much time...I'm sure the others will lay soon.I didn't expect two eggs on the same day.
  • Hey Ben, I'm really curious to see how that italian tree tomato performs for you, I never seem to have much luck with the really large ones. You and I alone have planted over 20 varieties of heirloom tomatoes this season (!) it will be really fun to see which ones do well here.
  • Thanks, Ben. I've got a 4 x 20 raised bed garden I am working on and it seems I'll need a lot of vermiculite. I live in Goodyear. I'm going to check again at Home Depot. I may have asked the wrong guy. All he showed me was 8 qt. bags. Thanks.
  • I can probably make it tommorrow after 4:30pm. I will give you a call to confirm and get your address tommorrow.
