Yes, I am attempting to grow potatoes in a bucket. I'm just using bits of grocery store potatoes. I'm using the method described here:

    http://www.thefarm.org/charities/i4at/lib2/garden.htm

For more potatoes, you can even use a big trash can or a food grade barrel. I happened to have that big tub left over from a party. So I'm using that.

    BTW that bread looks AWESOME!
  • i'm an amateur at seed collecting so i may not be the best person to answer that question, but my plan was to wait until the plants died and then collect the dried pods with the seeds in them. funny you mention it because i was planning on tearing them up today. i hope next year i will have a spot for them in backyard, because then i can just let them dry up and it wont look so bad. (actually it will still look exactly the same, but no one but me will see them =) lol. ruby sheffer teaches a seed saving class that i'd recommend. also , i've just been gifted a book called seed to seed. i haven't had much of an opportunity to read it yet but what i've skimmed so far has a lot of really useful information in it.
  • thank you so much for the kind comments. i just have a little point and shoot sony camera, but with digital you can take a million so it's a lot easier to get good ones. i have a lot of fun doing it.
  • thank you , and yes, it is arugula. i'm waiting to collect the seeds which seems to be taking forever. the bees and ladybugs are happy it's still there though =)
  • Do you have pics of your coop and the new and improved safety measures? I would love to see your updates.
  • Hi Lylah,
What do you plan to do about replacing your hens? What a horrific time to go through. I am so sorry for your loss.
I would love to hear your lessons learned as I have have big dogs and hawks in the neighborhood.
  • Hi Lylah,
I'm was pleased to see you added me as a friend. I'm sorry to hear about your chickens. I have lost 4 akitas over the last couple of years and it is hard to loose an animal. I love flower gardening and grow a few veges but since I live at an elevation of 6500' it is limited to spring and summer.
  • Thanks for adding me as a friend. I just read your blog post. I am so sorry about your chickens, that sounds horrible. Especially since I know how attached my kids are to our chickens.
