Hi Leanne :) My basil was in a 4' x 6' raised bed garden that was between the house and a retaining wall. As you can see not a lot of room on either side to work though! The E & W light reached the garden but one of the perks of that spot was that the retaining wall did provide some shade in the hotter parts of the day. It ended up being a pretty successful place to grow once the drip system was in.
