  • Morning: I'd stick with Ken. If you are talking about the place by the dump, (27th ave I think) I never went back. Their stuff was too black and too amonia smelling. It was black even though all the stuff wasn't broke down. There is the guy south of the river bottom on 35th. He's a little cantankourous. He wouldn't let me go back to look at the stuff, and his smallest load is 4 yards. too big for my toyota. He talked a good game and the stuff looked good from a hundred yards away.

I will go directly to the source for the seeds, I thaught you wanted to get rid of them all. No Biggie, There is wild amaranth growing there now. They might die in the heat, they are just sprouts now. If they make it to 6" tall I'll harvest some greens and whack down the rest for the worms. Thnx for getting back, have a fun day- charly
  • my pleasure ;)
  • Hi, I eavesdropped on your offer to Eva for the ground cover seeds. If she did not take you up on it, I could use them. I have earthworm castings as a return gift.
  • Hi Jane - I would love to see your ladies and your set up, if you don't mind. We are closer to getting chickens but are still working on a design for the coop and yard that will allow the ladies to eat down my garden and fertilize it when the veggies are done for the season-saves me some labor :). We are out of town this weekend but have next weekend free if you have a window of opportunity...my regular email is Julie@goldstarstaffingservices.com if you'd like to email me directly...thanks for replying - I was really pleased to get your email - you still have awesome pictures!! Julie
  • Hi Jane, I am also a Sunburst Farms resident (Port Au Prince) and am looking to purchase fresh eggs and ask questions. Would love to see your set up one day...I am thinking of having a few chickens but am taking my time - my husband has yet to be convinced of the cuteness factor ;0). I am also worried about the predators. For now I have a garden, 2 dogs and 4 cats (which I am also worried about as the cats are eying the birds in a very disturbing way and they enjoy bringing their snacks in the house!). Are your gals fenced or is that the garden fence in the pictures? Great pictures! Julie
  • Hey Jane! Thanks~ it was actually taken back in March, I go through this dark phase every 3 or 4 months.:) Lol ~ Heather
  • I think everything is worked out with Amy's move today... she's hiring a crew from Tucson to take care of it... my stuff will get moved this weekend. Thanks for offering! :)
  • Thank you Jane :)
  • I think in general, maybe it would be a good idea for people (if they're willing) to make a post to the permaculture listserv before they drive out there. I would have last time, but I got back from another state and saw that we needed to get more food that day.
I live a couple doors down from Myron and a mile or two from Greg, so it would be really easy to arrange. I think Myron tried to organize something like this once before... (?)
Thanks for the comments about the paintings. :)
  • Hi Jane,
The one is an Americauna and the other is a Rhode Island Red. I was trying just to hold the RIR, but the other one decided she wanted to be in the pic too and flew up on my arm. :)
I've been happy with Aden's (except for the drive) but it's only $22.50 per 50lbs. They usually have it (call first), they told me they get it in every 2 weeks or so. I think it would be great to organize trips there so one person can pick up enough for 4 or 5 people and then they could just come pick it up from that person's house and pay them back plus like $2 for gas...

"Ricardo and Catherine, thanks for pitching in on this. I think Ricardo's last sentence, above says it all.
Notwithstanding that, if someone can come close to a true scientific experiment on growing plants with and without using it, it'd be great to…"

"Hi Morgan, wow - thanks for all the information! I have used the fermented food scraps in compost, and most often have buried it in various places in the yard. My strawberries absolutely loved it (I had buried it before I planted them originally). I…"

"Hi Morgan, as you say, EM has been around for some time; Dr. Teruo Higa ran across it several decades ago and realized how effective it could be in a number of different ways. I've heard that Hawai'i does have quite an operation going. Aside from…"

Jane Doyle replied to Morgan Coffinger's discussion Bokashi Composting! in Soil Builders
"Jeff, you'd be amazed at how easy it is to make your own Bokashi. I've been doing it for years, using Effective Microorganisms I've purchased (currently I use http://www.Teraganix.com), unsulphured molasses, unchlorinated water, and a 25# bag of…"
