Allison Siegel replied to Victoria Jordan's discussion Young broody hen in Micro Livestock
"Yep-she can be broody this early. I had a hen that went broody over the first 12 eggs she laid. She hatched them and mothered them, too. I would caution against letting your hen brood fertilized eggs this time of year. My hen just hatched some-we…"

L S Lloyd replied to Allison Siegel's discussion How hot is too hot for chicks? in Micro Livestock
"you have a hen--you can leave most of that to her--Personally I would bring them all in in the afternoo when it is over 107.  (Her body temp is about 107) and and besides she will be pretty great about knowing what to do for her babies. I leave a…"

Sheri Schmeckpeper replied to Allison Siegel's discussion How hot is too hot for chicks? in Micro Livestock
"Start your chicks out around 95 - 100 degrees. Each week reduce their temperature by 5 degrees. So...during the day they'll be OK with shade and good ventilation, but at night you'll want to heat their brooder for a few weeks. They can't adjust…"

I have a broody hen sitting 12 eggs and expect them to hatch in about a week. We have an outside brooder, but should I bring the chicks inside? I'm kind of hoping to keep them out, but would not do so at the expense of their health. What do you…

Sheri Schmeckpeper replied to Allison Siegel's discussion My hen is passing broken eggs in Micro Livestock
"I have to concur with Ed. I'm guessing she's having problems because of her age, not infections or diseases.
It really sounds like her biggest problem is insufficient calcium (possibly do to age, but not necessarily). Do you supplement her feed with…"

"She's getting up there. Not certain what your plans are but hens don't lay forever.
Chickens are usually culled at the egg factory after 1-2 years. Production falls off."

I am hoping that someone will have some good advice for me. I have a 3-4 year old hen (she was given to us, so I'm not sure about her exact age) who has been laying broken eggs consistently. Today was the first day I've had to help her pass one in a…

Allison Siegel replied to L S Lloyd's discussion My hen has gone "broody" and I need a few eggs for her to raise.. in Micro Livestock
"I can help you. We live near Camelback and 36th St., if that isn't too far for you to drive. I have two roosters, both beautiful, big cochins, and they'd be more than happy to help your hen fulfill her dream of motherhood."

Allison Siegel replied to Allison Siegel's discussion Coccidiosis and Tapeworm-need to know how to treat... in Micro Livestock
"I should have taken my girl to the vet earlier than I did. When I finally did, it was because she wouldn't get off the nest, and she hadn't laid an egg in 3 days, which is unusual for her. The vet found a broken egg in her, and ran a fecal cult…"

Rachel replied to Allison Siegel's discussion Coccidiosis and Tapeworm-need to know how to treat... in Micro Livestock
"I'm surprised your vet confirmed the tapeworms but didn't tell you what to do about it. Out of curiosity, how much did the vet charge for the diagnosis?
I would treat all of your birds. I think the cocci-rid is a powder that you mix in with the feed…"
