"Hi,
We harvested the buds of the chain-fruit cholla last year, this year we are harvesting the buds from the buck horn and stag horn.  First, they are not at all like nopal cactus pads.  To remove the spines we used the method depicted in the photo…"

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Michelle Neeley's discussion Citrus in new compost pile?? in Soil Builders

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Sharon Austerman's discussion Is there a way to fertilize my lawn without harming my dogs? in Soil Builders
"Hi Sharon,
There are many people in the valley who have horses and need to have the manure removed--if you can find manure that is at least one year old it will provide great fertilizer for your lawn.  You can often get it for free.

"That is the cholla, but those are all fruits, no flower buds. While one can eat the fruits as in they won't hurt you, I did not find them appetizing--the buds on the other hand taste like asparagus. So far as I know, it is the buds of chain-fruit…"
