  • Hi, thank you for the welcome! Busy building and gardening.
    Cheers,

  • Thank you, Ericka! I appreciate your warm welcome!
  • Rebuilding the Organic Content and Soil Food Web is key to healthy food, and boycotting everything that is GMO and / or processed, boycott all Phude, adultersated 'food'.

the ORIGINAL Fast Food was an organic Apple.

This afternoon I am going to write an article about our relationship with earthworms. We are dependant upon earthworms to help build the soil. The earthworms can build the soil better than we can. We can help, empower the earthworms by providing them with leaves and other organic material for them to feed upon.

  • I like the idea of a garden being a "shovel ready project", and as we evolve to No-Till, letting the earthworms do the tilling, we won't nee the shovel until it is time to dig up the potatoes.
  • Het-er-or-hab-di-tis bac-ter-i-o-phor-a is a beneficial nematode that reportedly is a Voracious hunter of many pest insects including squash borer.

I have also read that slices of cucumber in aluminum dishes will yield an odor that drives away many pest insects. Has anyone else heard of this?

Also I am wondering whether adding a little Rock Dust to the soil will improve the mineral availability so the plants are healthier, and thus, not attract insect pests. see http://www.remineralize.org.
  • Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to participating in some discussions around here.
  • The school is 10 years old so imagine the plot is about the same. It's about 30 x 20, not too big. We would love to have you come by. I'm not always there so we could set up a time would work for us. A Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon would be good. The school day ends at 3:30. I'm flexible most days so let me know what would work.
  • Thanks for the welcome Ericka! I'm excited to be in this community.
  • Thanks for the welcome and kind words Ericka.just starting to acquaint myself with the site.
  • Thank you for catching the misspelling Ericka. Everything on the internet should have a spell check option. : )
I think the problem with our garden is lack of enthusiasm on everyone's part. I thought if someone wanted to visit the school and give the kids some fresh input it might get them going again. I did purchase the game so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for your interest.

Ericka replied to Kelly Liston's discussion What is happening to my chicken?? in Micro Livestock
"Fowl Pox most likely, there are both wet and dry versions. Google a bit to see which one you might have. Dry fowl pox it seems to run it's course and clear up on its own. Spread by mosquitos, pretty common."

Ericka replied to Rachel Brumitt's discussion Building Good Soil For Raised Beds in Soil Builders
"The best way to garden here is directly in the ground, not raised beds, unless you are in a really rocky area up on the mountain. Sunken beds hold moisture better in our climate, and all that is really needed is adding organic matter, 50% compost to…"

Ericka replied to Judith Levin's discussion Sick chicken in Micro Livestock
"Sorry for your loss. This time of year is so rough for hens and they are pretty fragile birds. Especially older hens. We use large terra-cotta saucers (like the ones you use under huge pots) raised up a bit on cinder blocks. We change out the water…"
