  • This makes for an interesting discussion between two Midwestern universities (the one I referenced and the one you referenced) about the soil conditions here in the valley. I think the reason why some of the local nurseries recommend gypsum is because they are more concern with the high salinity of some local soils than the “complex reactions with soluble aluminum” that may (or may not) occur. They may be operating on your assumption that “most people are not interested in the chemical formulations of soil”. That is an unfortunate assumption in both instances.
  • Thanks Heather! Looking forward to the classes!

  • Hi Heather! Thanks for commenting on my page! I believe I sent you a short novel of a message, so I'll keep it short here- I signed up for the vegetable class this month but unfortunately had a conflict with the house I"m trying to buy and I missed the 1st week. Should I wait until next month to attend your class so I can start from week one? Or should I be there on Saturday and play catch up? Please let me know!
Thanks so much- I am SO eager to attend your class!

  • Heather,
Thank you for the information. You definitely answered my question and (unfortunately) confirmed my suspicion. It's a good thing I've gotten a little behind schedule ;) I think I may be able to still take some of them back with a receipt, and those that I can't take back I'll find somewhere to give away to, unless I can find one of these seed swaps.
Going off of the "organic" misinformation labeling, do you know if garden and potting soil marked as "Organic Choice" (I think it's Miracle-Gro brand) could also lead to similar contamination? Or is the only negative the fact that they are simply not what they say are? In other words, could it lead to an actual negative physical impact to crops?
I also had a couple quick questions on lasagna gardening -- I think I may have used my quota for the day :) You mentioned this past Saturday that raised beds suffer from more heat exposure and retainment, and as a result require more efforts to moderate temperature. Won't lasagna gardening without digging still suffer from the same downside? I can't recall if you touched on this or not in class. I was considering digging a few inches down in my proposed plot and trying the lasagna gardening there to minimize the potential effect and to use the dug up dirt as a small border/barrier to discourage my dogs from getting in there. Also, are the number of inches of each layer of compost and mulch a strict rule of thumb? I've seen recommendations online of 4" - 6" per layer and I'm curious if only using, say 2"- 3", really reduces the effectiveness that much. Perhaps it's to accommodate for maximum root growth?

    Thanks again,
    Joey
  • Hi Heather,
I'm attending your vegetable gardening classes and had a quick question on seeds. Although I'm going to be ordering seeds primarily from Native Seeds and a few other similar sites, I still have some packets of organic seeds I purchased locally (i.e. Home Depot, Wal Mart, etc.) a few months ago. My question is, although they are marked as "USDA Organic", can they still contain "terminator genes"? I tried searching online for the companies that made them, but I'm seeing conflicting information. The last thing I want to do is allow terminator genes to potentially infect heirloom seeds I'll be purchasing.

    Thanks,
    Joey

  • Heather,
I was wondering if you know of any way to convert the water I backwash from my pool into gray water to water my garden. It seems such a waste to not use it for something.
    Thank you,
    Erika
  • emailed you - it's not as time sensitive as I'd originally though, so get to it when you can. :) Thanks!
