Joe, I did the chicken bath....never actually saw them in it, but they pooped in it and made marvelous "tea" I just used on my corn, so I'm going to keep a container of water in there just for that purpose! Thanks for the great idea.
You free range your chickens, right? Do you have any wonderful ways of dealing with poop on the porch, or worse tracked into the house? Any problems with predators? What are your hen's surprising food likes? The surprise favorite here is left over milk that my daughter didn't finish, especially with cereal!
"Stacy, I had my run in a small courtyard (8x8) with block walls and had a problem with gray fuzzy mold whenever moisture accumulated from rain, misters, or water spills. It even got near their food once. My understanding is that if chickens inhale…"
"The state vet has a diagnostic lab in Tucson, but I don't think they test live animals. You will probably need to go through a vet, and it will be expensive."
I have been going around in circles search for information on the internet with little to no success. I would be grateful for any ideas the group can offer.I have one remaining hen from my small flock of three. The deaths of the other two were not…
"RE: Chicken bath
Until they get used to the process, just be prepared to get a shower too Sue. I read that it helps if you put a big rock, concrete block or paving block in the water so they can get a handle on the depth of the "pool." They will…"
"I have a very nice used wooden rabbit hutch available for $100. My bunny, Fiver, passed away from old age (he was 8) in August, I do not want another one and we need to move it. It has 2 rooms, a shelf, and is really big, about 3'x5', on stilts, and…"
Fellow Chicken and/or Rabbit Keepers:This is not an attempt to sell anything, just want to pass on a great deal to fellow permies. I just bought my second Chick-n-Hutch from this kind soul who is offering them for about $50, who is also local near…
Winnie (Winchester if a boy, Winnipeg if a girl) is an extremely animated little Naked Neck, and I've gotten really attached in the short time he's been with me. Problem is he was a gift from someone who did not know about the "no rooster" law in…
"Would welcome any suggestions for treats? My hens are pretty finicky about treats. They get real excited when I introduce a fruit treat, but get tired of it by the second or third offering.
Only the adult hen of my flock of 3 gets to free range all…"
"Thanks for commenting on my photo. Hens sure do want to get in the house! I am amazed at how friendly and smart (in a chicken sort'a way) they are. Nice chicken tractor btw!"
I recently attended your aquaculture class and asked about converting a chlorine pool to a natural swimming pond. I am in the middle of the project and feel like the contractor is trying to pull a fast one on me. Besides putting bio balls in…"
