  • Yes, we live in Sahuarita, south of Tucson headed toward Nogales. But we're also up the mountain at about 4500 feet, so we're quite a bit cooler than where you are. Typically we get temps about five degrees cooler than Tucson, so more like 8-10 degrees cooler than where you are. Bummer for an early garden, but better in the summer when it's really hot.
  • Wow, tomatoes already? That's awesome! I'd love to come see your garden sometime. My husband always likes to look at what others are doing.

The chickens are mostly for eggs, although we'll put them in the pot if they're not keeping busy. Too many roosters and they'll get the same fate. I need enough roosters for a new crop of chicks next year though.

When they start laying I'll have enough to sell at the farmer's market in Tucson, or Green Valley. People around here definitely appreciate organic foods.
  • Beautiful produce! I'm jealous. We're just beginning to plant our garden this spring. I've gardened before, so I'll just have to learn how to garden in the Arizona climate. This site seems to be a good resource for friends and advice. Adding you as friend :)
  • oh yea i forgot , dad called today he said tell you thanks for the grapefruit. they are running about 1.00 each in ohio right now
  • any time just give me a call to make sure im around, i run around alot since i retired
  • Julie did I see you live in sunburst Farms ?
  • I can't take credit for growing the peppers, just admiring thier beauty and immortalizing them with my camera. I've tried veggie gardening but was outnumbered and outsmarted by the cunning determination of the desert wildlife. I have a hard time convincing my husband to build sturdy-enough enclosures for me. Same goes for having chickens. Oh well, maybe when we retire...... Till then I can support someone else's farming talents.
Great to hear that you sponsor kids! It's a great way to raise your kids' awareness of the bigger world out there.
  • Hi Julie, way back in August you left a comment for me and I am very sorry I somehow missed it; it's so cool to have a neighbor here in Sunburst Farms! Sounds like you're on one of the two acre properties and your garden looks outstanding! Is that PVC you've used for your shading system? You are more than welcome to come see my chickens, and I'd be happy to give you some eggs if you haven't already started your own flock. Looks like you'd have some great advice to share in gardening too - I've got my bed conditioned and ready for seeding. Enjoy your Urban Farm tour!
  • your block wall will have shade in the early evening in the summer.
  • That's good to know. I will have to check on my stuff for the frost. I'm 1 story up, and I haven't seen any frost yet. I check them every morning.

You might try the Tolmachoff farm on 75th ave South of Bethany home Road for some chicken poop too. Talk to Bill and tell him Gary's friend Missy sent you..

"Our purple cabbage was very sweet as well - I had heard that a good freeze improves them just as it does brocolli - know if there's any truth to that? My pumpkin vine is growing well, as is the corn if I can keep the dogs from eating the stalks!"
