  • thanks for the welcome.
  • Thank you Ericka!! I was surprised by the huge crop we got for the first year after planting and all bunches were very nice. And, oh my gosh the wonderful flavor. Now the challenge is to get the pruning done right. It is growing on a temporary trellis and we are hoping to get the new fence built dividing our lawn from the garden which will include an arbor and six foot high section of fence for the vine. Too many projects and so little time. Good luck with your grapes, they seem to love our valley.

  • Ericka,
Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I already feel the strong sense of friendship that exists between members and look forward to all the knowledge our family will gain.
Bear with me however, I'm new to the cyberworld. But I'm extremely excited to join this group!

  • Hey stranger how are you? I finally have 4 hens who are laying (although the past 3 days they are on strike). I have a sad looking garden that the chickens think is all theirs. Whats new with you? Hope all is well.

  • Responding to Oct 5 comment...you can't rush quality. I did finally see Joy's comments. Thanks for passing it along. I love having garden tours of the place, they are fun and informative. I always learn so much.
  • Hi Ericka...thanks for your welcome. We will continue trying our best to create a garden in our backyard. When I lived in Ohio and Massachusetts, I just put the seeds in and lo and behold they grew! (I had to compete with the bunnies, groundhogs and deer!)
  • Thanks... I wish I'd been having such good luck w/my lettuces in the subsequent yrs... Dratted birds pull up the seedlings as soon as they peek out... Have invested considerable $ in putting up a frame and netting...

Ericka replied to Kelly Liston's discussion What is happening to my chicken?? in Micro Livestock
"Fowl Pox most likely, there are both wet and dry versions. Google a bit to see which one you might have. Dry fowl pox it seems to run it's course and clear up on its own. Spread by mosquitos, pretty common."

Ericka replied to Rachel Brumitt's discussion Building Good Soil For Raised Beds in Soil Builders
"The best way to garden here is directly in the ground, not raised beds, unless you are in a really rocky area up on the mountain. Sunken beds hold moisture better in our climate, and all that is really needed is adding organic matter, 50% compost to…"

Ericka replied to Judith Levin's discussion Sick chicken in Micro Livestock
"Sorry for your loss. This time of year is so rough for hens and they are pretty fragile birds. Especially older hens. We use large terra-cotta saucers (like the ones you use under huge pots) raised up a bit on cinder blocks. We change out the water…"
