  • Thanks, Ericka. I've been gardening all my life, but just became aware of this group today. It feels like coming home. I'm registered for two classes and am looking forward to many more, learning new information and meeting like-minded folk.
  • Thanks. I'm glad to be getting connected to a local group. I am interested in sharing ideas about becoming more self- sustaining in the city. I have some edible plants started, chickens, and plans to get more energy efficient.
  • Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to meeting you.
  • Hi, thank you. So glad to have found this group! That's so awesome that you used to raise monarchs as a kid! I didn't know a whole lot about butterflies when I was a kid. When I was a kid I always wanted to live on a farm and have been captivated by nature.(Must have been my past life or something.) :) Not that long ago I had to go through what I thought at the time was going to be a difficult loss that ended up turning into more of a magical and uplifting experience with the help of butterflies, Ever since my kids and I can't get enough. I can appreciate those fond memories you had as a kid. I'm so glad my girls will too. I don't understand why more places don't sell milk weed. It's so hard to find out here. I look forward to meeting you and becoming an active member. I am planning on attending the Living Green Conference tomorrow maybe I will see you there?
  • Thank you for the welcome
  • Thanks for the welcome, Ericka!
  • Thanks for your good common-sense answer regarding mulch. I will bring it up with Don Titmus when my wife and I attend the permaculture design course!
  • Dear Ericka, I saw your post about the free mulch that you found on Craigs List. I have found some too, and wonder of its quality -- that is, if it may contain toxic sprays, or similar.

What is your opinion on this?

    Thank you,
    Robert Cote
  • Thank you for approving my account! LOVE the Squash Bug Remedy tip, you can be sure we will use it!
  • Thank you. Happy to learn more a about living with nature, gardening, solar ovens, etc. Then I can share with those who attend my classes here in Sedona, and with friends w. similar interests. Mary Lee

Ericka replied to Kelly Liston's discussion What is happening to my chicken?? in Micro Livestock
"Fowl Pox most likely, there are both wet and dry versions. Google a bit to see which one you might have. Dry fowl pox it seems to run it's course and clear up on its own. Spread by mosquitos, pretty common."

Ericka replied to Rachel Brumitt's discussion Building Good Soil For Raised Beds in Soil Builders
"The best way to garden here is directly in the ground, not raised beds, unless you are in a really rocky area up on the mountain. Sunken beds hold moisture better in our climate, and all that is really needed is adding organic matter, 50% compost to…"

Ericka replied to Judith Levin's discussion Sick chicken in Micro Livestock
"Sorry for your loss. This time of year is so rough for hens and they are pretty fragile birds. Especially older hens. We use large terra-cotta saucers (like the ones you use under huge pots) raised up a bit on cinder blocks. We change out the water…"

"This looks like a great large scale project. Take lots of photos before, and I know personally I would love to see what the site looks like in a year, 2 years, 3 years etc.
Very cool that some of the heavy lifting was done by tractor…appropriate use…"
