  • Thanks for the welcome.
Woke up this morning and heard one of the "chickens" crow! Yes, I think it is a rooster. Of the 5 Rhode Island Reds (3 month old), 3 look like roosters. Unfortunately we can not keep them. If you know any one that would like to have good healthy roosters please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Hello Ericka,

The Ladies had to go due to the many changes that had occurred since their arrival. I did not have the time and energy to provide the proper care. I work with other farmers on increasing production AND quality of life for various farm animals. It would be nice to think that eventually, we will be able to have a flock again - later. They certainly taught me a great deal. Do you have hens?
  • thanks for the warm welcome, looking forward to learning a lot here!
  • Thanks for the welcome note. :) ~Stephanie S.
  • Thanks for saying hello. Our preparations for the move West are happening and it is exciting to think we will be making new friends soon. We are hoping to find a chicken, goat, bee and micro-farm friendly community. Its hard to tell by searching the real estate websites. We have a realtor, but still its not the same without seeing places yourself. We want to be within a 30 minute commute from Scottsdale. Any thoughts?
  • Thank you Erica, I'm most glad to be here. Loved the Guild in Santa Fe--they are very active. Love and Blessings Sheryl Purath
  • Hey Ericka, thanks, jazz is good for greens, as long as it isn't too wild.

Ericka replied to Kelly Liston's discussion What is happening to my chicken?? in Micro Livestock
"Fowl Pox most likely, there are both wet and dry versions. Google a bit to see which one you might have. Dry fowl pox it seems to run it's course and clear up on its own. Spread by mosquitos, pretty common."

Ericka replied to Rachel Brumitt's discussion Building Good Soil For Raised Beds in Soil Builders
"The best way to garden here is directly in the ground, not raised beds, unless you are in a really rocky area up on the mountain. Sunken beds hold moisture better in our climate, and all that is really needed is adding organic matter, 50% compost to…"

"Sorry for your loss. This time of year is so rough for hens and they are pretty fragile birds. Especially older hens. We use large terra-cotta saucers (like the ones you use under huge pots) raised up a bit on cinder blocks. We change out the water…"
