Catherine, The Herb Lady replied to April A Ortiz's discussion Flock Problems in Micro Livestock
"April, some of the other permies currently raising hens may have some better thoughts, but I found an old thread which might be helpful.

Personally I would be worried about them eating the peach tree leaves more than the pine, but that may be…"

We are having a few issues in my flock of 10 hens.  1st issue that has been happening for awhile is feather plucking.  I spoke to the feed store today and they recommended switching to start and grow for added protein, changing scratch to a mix of…

Sheri Schmeckpeper replied to April A Ortiz's discussion Weird bump in Micro Livestock
"I agree, I'm sure it's their oil gland. Ducks glands are even more prominent glands. Watch your birds as they preen themselves. They'll reach back there and rub it to get oil on their beak that they can spread onto their feathers."

Sheri Schmeckpeper replied to April A Ortiz's discussion Yucky Butt in Micro Livestock
"I agree with Becky, clean her off and observe. It could be simple stress, or eating new things that were in your garden that she's not used to. Being in a new place with established birds may add stress as they work through their new pecking order,…"

April A Ortiz replied to April A Ortiz's discussion Yucky Butt in Micro Livestock
"Unfortunately I didn't think to quarentine.  I have mixed them already.  Should I go take them out or is it too little to late? The only spot I have to put them is back in the fenced garden.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I will hose her off and see…"

Becky replied to April A Ortiz's discussion Yucky Butt in Micro Livestock
"First of all, did you put the new chickens in with existing chickens?  You really need to quarantine new chickens so if there is a problem your existing chickens aren't exposed.
As far as the yucky butt goes, I would clean it up (with the hose) and…"
