Weird bump

Hello All- 3 of my Americanas have been getting pecked by my Barred Rocks.  I have been spraying them with Hot Pick and it appears to be helping some however, 2 of them have a bump about 1/2 an inch above their tail.  It is cylindral and appears to look like it has puss in it but I squeezed it and nothing happened.  Any idea what it could be and should I be doing something about it?  Also, should I be cleaning their pecked areas before I apply hot pick?  Thanks,

  • Here is a picture of the oil gland in a butchered & plucked chicken: http://butcherachicken.blogspot.com/2007/09/step-6-remove-oil-gland...   There are actually two little lumps and a little valve tube that the oil comes out of when they need some. If your bump is in this area, I'm sure it's the gland.  (When you butcher, you can leave the chicken's oil gland in, but a duck's should be removed because it's larger and can affect the flavor of the meat.)

As for the hot pick, I've never used it, but it would make sense to clean any injuries. I doubt cleaning will change the effectiveness of the hot pick, but it could benefit the pecked bird by helping the healing process.

  • Any pictures?  I wanna see.

  • I agree, I'm sure it's their oil gland. Ducks glands are even more prominent glands. Watch your birds as they preen themselves. They'll reach back there and rub it to get oil on their beak that they can spread onto their feathers.

  • Most likely the chicken's oil gland (http://chickens.wikia.com/wiki/Uropygial_gland)
