  • Hello, my name is Charly and My wife's is Ruthy. Just wanted to introduce myself. We looked at property in Aguila. I like it out there, but my model is for urban agriculture. If I am wildly successful I would someday get a large parcel of land and Aguila would be perfect. You are a little higher than us here in Phx. Do you get winter freezes? Can you do cool weather crops all winter like here in the valley? The sad part of my trip to Aguila was the cantalope monoculture. Here after all we've learned about corporate agriculture, and they are doing the same thing to that valley as they have done here in the low desert and to the california valleys. Corporate chemical monoculture. I also saw a CAFO UPSTREAM from the cantalope operations. Whos in control up there? You better get on the stick. Ha Ha. Anyway, nice to have your acquaintence.--charly
  • Lindy,
How are you doing? I hope all is well with you and your family--both the human and animal members. :-)
I wanted to tell you that if the book group fizzles out due to lack of interest I'd still be interested in discussing the books with you. I read Fast Food Nation a while back--it was fascinating and had a big impact on my eating habits. I'd like to hear what you think.
    Take care!
    Judy
p.s. As far as the book group goes, I really considered taking over the leadership of it, but I decided it's too frustrating when so few people ever bother to show up. I know we had a few good meetings, but for the most part it's mostly me and you, and maybe one or two others at each meeting, but there's not any consistent attendance.
  • Lindy,
I hope Molly and the pups are doing okay. Did you get good news from the vet?
Actually, we did talk about water conservation at the book club, just not as much of the corporate and international politics that were in the book, but more on what we can do as individuals in our own cities. In fact one of the people there (Pam) has a rainwater harvesting business--she sells containers to hold rainwater, which I thought was really cool and a much needed business around here since a lot of people would like to collect water but don't have the know-how or desire to make their own storage tanks. So there is definitely interest in conserving water at least on a local level.
Take care, and best wishes to the pooches!
    Judy
  • Hi Lindy,
The book club went well. Actually almost no one read the book, but we had a good discussion anyway! I had a few study questions ready, some from the internet and some I made up but I didn't use them because they were really based on the book. For some reason it seems everyone had trouble reading Blue Gold this month. Did some of the pups go to the foster homes yet?? Hopefully you won't be quite so busy when you don't have so many (and so much poop cleanup-yikes!). Take care! Hope to see ya at the next one!
    Judy
  • Hi Lindy,
I've been scouring the internet to find some good discussion questions for Blue Gold. I've learned a heck of a lot about what I should or shoulnd't be doing on the small scale (I just decided 10 minutes ago to completely boycott Coke, for one thing!) but I'm having trouble finding good questions for the book club. Do you have any good internet sources for that kind of thing? I thought if anyone would know, it would be you, being a teacher and all!
How are you enjoying this fabulous weather??
    Judy
  • Lindy,
Oh, those pups are just precious! They look like little beag-weilers!! LOL! Thanks for sending the link.
If nobody else volunteers I'll lead the book discussion this weekend since I'll be there in any case. I don't really like to be in charge of things, but like you said it's easy enough. Maybe I'll even bring some snacks to make sure everyone feels happy and satisfied. ;-)
Take care, and keep me posted.
    Judy
  • Hi Lindy!
Those are the same little chicks, 4 months later!! The dark one is an americauna, the black/gold is a polish, and the white with the hat is a leghorn. Hoping for eggs by Christmas!! :-)
How are the puppies? Are they still with you? I hope all is well.
    Take care,
    Judy
  • Hi Lindy,
How are you doing? Gosh, your husband really has a knack for rescuing dogs. How are the mama and pups doing? Do you have any idea what kind of dog the father might have been? I hope they're all doing well. Send pics if you get any free time--there's nothing I love more than puppies!
I'm going to the Toolbox talk this evening. Should be interesting. I finished the book, and it was very informative.
    Take care!
    Judy
  • Hi Lindy,
I can imagine it would cost a fortune in gas for you to get to town. I complain just coming from Chandler to Phoenix. But we really need you at the book meetings. :-) Have you started "Toolbox" yet? I just picked it up from Changing Hands yesterday.
    Judy
  • Hi Judy - I do hope we can get more interest in both the books and food as time goes on. I also hope I will be able to continue attending as the cost of gas is a tad painful. I had baked the fresh bread and then had to put it in the freezer. I will try again for Sept.

Thanks for keeping me up to date. :-D

    Lindy

I agree. There is some shocking information in the book-the kinds of things that the fast food companies are careful to keep well hidden from the public. It's definitely something that more people ought to read to be aware of what goes on…"
