  • You know I have never been 100% sure if it was an artichoke flower as the leaves did not look like the pics I have looked up. They were quite thick and not shaped the same as a typical artichoke plant. This was a photo I took when visiting a friend in CA. I thought it was such a gorgeous flower. It was on a small tree and the buds looked just like artichokes.
  • Welcome! Is that an artichoke flower for your avatar?

I have two roosters up for adoption.  They are part Australorpe and "barnyard mix" as I am not sure what mother is.  She is a bantam that looks like a barred rock with a black beard.  They are beautiful roosters but I have 3 and not enough hens.…

all of her pin feathers are here and she does not appear to be molting but she just looks thin because of the lack of down.  is this normal to happen in the winter?  None of my other girls have the same problem.  I have her in my arms now wrapped in…

Evelyn Navarro replied to Theresa McCullough's discussion Chicken foot is broken in Micro Livestock
"I had a dog/chicken incident and our mean rooster had his leg injured.  I splinted it with popscicle sticks and surgical tape so he could bear some weight and get around.  It took a few months before he lost the gimp but he was fine! It humbled him…"

Evelyn Navarro replied to Stephanie's discussion Chickens and Scorpions in Micro Livestock
"I got chickens for this very reason! In fact, whenever I am doing yard work I have them running along side me. Just yesterday I was raking and unearthed 3 scorpions and my girls were right there to gobble them up. As far as dogs.... We do not have…"

Evelyn Navarro replied to Pam Rawlins's discussion To Mist or Not to Mist in Micro Livestock
"I know I have sparked several comments in relation to the heat and chicken fatalities and I only wish I had been on PPG sooner to read the plethora of advise and knowledge out here for raising chickens in AZ heat. I have a mister that I have on the…"

"Does anyone use vines to help protect against the heat? My recently converted shed has south and west facing walls that don't have any shade. I've got an umbrella up now but thinking that growing some vines up the sides might help. Any…"

"I do have tarps on there now that are silver on the outside. They were quite a bit more than the standard tarp but it helps reflect the heat during the day. I have since added the mister and the remaining chickens seem to be fairing quite well at…"

Judy Tobar replied to Evelyn Navarro's discussion 5 unexplained dead chickens in one morning! in Micro Livestock
"I am so sorry this happened to you. I am wondering if it could be that their drinking water was too cold. I know that seems weird in this heat, when colder is generally better, but I was reading recently that you shouldn't give ice water to dogs in…"

"I have a few large terra cotta pot bottoms in my coop. I fill them with water in the morning and again in the evening. My hens love standing in them most of the day. Since the increase in temps, I have even found them roosting in the them at night…"

I freeze large chunks of ice to put in it each day. The ice cubes melt way too fast!"

Catherine, The Herb Lady replied to Evelyn Navarro's discussion 5 unexplained dead chickens in one morning! in Micro Livestock
"Hi Evelyn,

I would add just another thought or two to those already stated. Based on the 'shade cloth on top and tarps on the sides', your configuration could be holding in more heat than you think. As a long time desert gardener 'we' learned a…"

"I have learned so much from this. I just designed my coop and was planning on building next week. I added a few things to my list i.e. misters and wadeing pool. I am soory for your loss, but I have learned volumes from it. I am new to chickens."

"For my "pool" I use one of those plastic under-the-bed boxes and fill it with 2" of water and a tray of ice cubes. It was what I already had around the house and I can maneuver it somewhat easier :)"

"I have a 10' x 10' dog kennel with a separate box inside for roosting so there is definitely ventilation. I have a sun shade on the roof (screen type for kennels) and I have tarps on 3 sides to reflect the heat in the day and add shade but it is…"
