Feathers

Just curious .....my chicks are 10 weeks old & I am seeing a few soft downy feathers every morning in the coop. Is this normal feather development, loss from the heat or something else.By the way...we got the mites solved & the girls have a sand box to bathe in now...I also threw out all old bedding & used an enviro friendly insecticide called Orange Gard all over the coop before I moved them inside again. I haven't seen any mites on them since I dusted them all with DE & changed bedding etc.................

  • Thanks Beth....I don't do that...I will now. Is the DE food grade or pool kind? Also...I'm loosing a hen...I think either heat stroke or burst an egg inside. BUMMER.....we brought her inside, I got some avian electrolytes...but think it's too late. This is the sad/bummer part of having the girls....oh, well...it's worth it...

Do you have a fan blowing on yours? We do AND the wood shavings that we wet down AND a little pale with water that they step in.....
    • you need to use the food grade DE
    • thanks dan....that's good to know...i have it....will set up a bath for them...any ideas how?
    • yes, forgot to say food grade. Its 25.oo bucks at Scottsdale Livestock for a 50# bag. Or about 5.00 for a ziplock bag full.

I would be happy to split the bag I just bought with you , I have only used a little of it. But we could go halves on it.
    • I'd love to go halves with you...such a great deal. So, the girl is gone. We're thinking she had an egg blow up in the inside.....bummer. I head your direction tomorrow night and could come by if that's convenient. :-) otherwise I come that way Saturday morn as well.
    • Sorry about your girl...so sad. Any thoughts about checking out her insides? I know it sounds creepy, but it might give you piece of mind to check the vent etc......

We had a little chicken funeral yesterday for our girl.
    • Saturday would be better...I work Thursday evening :)

The bag is huge & heavy, about twice the weight & size of a chicken feed bag. We could probably just put it into some trash bags, but if you have some containers that would work also.

    • Perfect....i am thinking around noon - i have a meeting from 10 - 11:30....if that doesn't work, just let me know.

I have some trash bags and a few 5 gallon buckets. I'll bring them.

I think I'll pass on checking her vent.... but know that I need to jump into that too if I'm gonna be a chicken lady :-)

I look forward to meeting you :-) I'll call when i'm on my way to your place on saturday....

      have a great day!
    • They have a misting fan that I blow on them from about 9am to 6pm.

So sorry to hear about your hen. One of mine passed away last week too. We firgured out that she actually injured herself in the coop. Getting down from a high perch....well we think that's what happened. I saw her earlier on the high perch & then later all huddled & sad...I thought she had cocci or the mite prob, but not really enough mites to do that. She had a small cut on her beak & I think she knocked herself out inside the coop & maybe had a small brain bleed...who knows. It is so sad to see them go, I wish they could tell us whats wrong.

If they weren't so expensive I would actually buy an evap cooler for the coop.

      Good luck with your girl.

      Beth
    • i picked a small cooler up for 40.00 on craigs list for my coop
