We used Trex lumber. It is made of about 95% recycled plastic and the rest is sawdust waste. Home Depot carries it. It shouldn't ever crack like wood, and it won't rot. We chose it because it will last a long time and doesn't need wood preservatives (it's not susceptible to termites or other insects). It is heavier than wood though, and costs more. We just thought the cost was worth it because it will last so long. The rest of the materials are: the 20'x30' perimeter has a 20" deep x 3" wide subterranean concrete squirrel and rabbit barrier (poured in a trench made by a power trencher). We left a few tube holes in that for the irrigation tubing later. The posts are set into larger and deeper poured concrete footers. Then there is 1/2" hardware cloth for the first wrap-around course of "wall" and the bottom edge of that is screwed and imbedded in the concrete squirrel barrier, then 1/2" aviary wire (chicken wire) for the rest of the wall courses and for the ceiling. The door is made of Trex. Hinges, screws, and washers are standard building supplies.
Thanks for the pond website. I glanced at it on my lunch break and I like what I've seen so far. I'd like to hear about your pond on Saturday. See you then!
