Nut Shells in Compost Bin?

Hi, I've been eating lots of nuts this past holiday season, the ones in shells and was wondering if those leftover shells can go into the compost bin? I have been eating the commerically mixed version, which includes brazil nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds.I'm a long-time composter (since the 80's) but for some reason, I never thought about whether to include nut shells or not!! Thanks for any thoughts on the subject. Kathy

  • Agree with Ben but have you enough to use as a mulch? Could mulch a pot or two. To break them down place on hard surface and trample with tough boots on, or use a roller etc. They will break down faster in the compost if the particle size is reduced.
  • yes, throw them in. They may take longer to breakdown, but they are okay.
