When to leave chicks out all night?

I have four chicks that are 7 weeks old. For the past week or so they have stayed out all day from early morning until dark.At this time of year when is it ok for them to stay out all night? What temperatures am I looking for?

  • Hi Erin

Yes I really like the Backyard chicken site too. Really got some good ideas for my "brooder" from there. I was just wondering what people thought of the local temperatures here and what they did.
  • Yes they are fun. We are really enjoying them.

We have them in a tractor portible type run during the day and have put them in an area we want cleared out. After a day or so they really got the hang of it. I also got a hanging feeder (thanks Dan :) ) and that has made a huge difference in how much feed they have been eating. A hanging waterer helps too.

We have been bringing them in at night but they LOVE being out all day and seem to know the routine and look forward it. They are in a 45 gal tub at night but it would seem way to small to keep them in during the day.
  • I have mine outside, they are about four weeks old. They were getting pretty stinky closed up in the bathroom, and I'm a pretty tolerant person when it comes to that stuff. Today I left the heat lamp on all day, and will keep it on at night for awhile, with the wind and cool temps. I also have their cage covered with blankets during the night, with the back open. I'm afraid to set the thing on fire, so I make sure there is nothing flamable near the light. They are up near the house so it blocks the wind on the open side. They have been fine, they are feathered out, and they sleep side by side, but don't seem to be "huddling", just getting cozy. Aren't they fun? I can't believe how much they eat, although they throw an awful lot, so who knows what is getting inside them! I love it!
  • Hi Roxanne,

I refer to Backyard Chickens when I have questions. Raising Chickens 101 They say about 60 days after they have feathered out. I think mine were about 8 weeks when I put them out in December so you'd probably be pretty safe. They huddle together and keep warm. Backyard Chickens also has a fantastic chicken forum.
