Hi All,

We've been thinking of raising a turkey for thanksgiving this year, but I haven't been able to find any place that sells small quantities of poults. I have two questions:

1) Is there a place in town where we could purchase a single chick?, and barring that,

2) would anyone be interested in sharing an order. Most hatcheries require a minimum shipment of 15 birds. We aren't set on a breed, but are looking into heirloom varieties.

Let me know!

Thanks!!!

best,

Rebecca

  • I'm not sure if this is the place we bought ours. We got a Black Spanish and a bronze. We paid $4, feed stores are around $10. These are $3. Certainly worth the call!

  • I have seen turkey chicks for sale at Mesa Feed Barn (Broadway and Mesa Dr) and also at Pet Club (Countyry Club just south of Main St) in Mesa. It was a couple of weeks ago so don't know if they still have any left. These are both in the western part of Mesa.
  • Bethany said it all, really. This year we have two that we picked up from a breeder who supplies the feed stores.  We've raised feed store turkeys before and have had great success; wonderful Thanksgiving dinners! Like Bethany said, heritage end up smaller. The feed store variety can easily be 24 lbs and up.
  • Out here in the East Valley, the feed stores normally get poults.  However, they are always the broad breasted varieties (either BBW or BBB).  If you want a heritage variety, I would suggest scanning Craigslist for people that hatch their own.  Or, if no one takes you up on going in on an order with you...then you could order the minimum # of poults and sell the ones you don't want on Craigslist.  You would sell them, I can almost guarantee it.  Although...if it is a heritage variety of turkey you want...and you want a bird bigger than 7-9 lbs, you'll be hard pressed growing them that big by the time Thanksgiving rolls around.  You've gotta start the heritage birds no later than April-early May to get them to Thanksgiving dinner size by Thanksgiving.
    • Thanks!!!
