Yesterday after checking out their post on craigslist, I went up to the feedlot, which is pretty far for most of us at 19th ave and deer valley (2020 W. Adobe is the exact address) but man did they have a HUGE selection of breeds. The operation is run mostly out of a warehouse looking place, they carry organic feed (I got a bag of layer for $23.99) and all kinds of other poultry. The older birds they have for sale are not all in the best of shape (some are feather picked etc) but they have harder to find breeds so I guess it's a trade off. They sold anaconas, barnvelders, delawares, phoenixes, polish, silkies etc in addition to all the usual birds. They were also selling meat birds that are pretty much ready to harvest for $5 each, and I think 5 for $20, not raised organically, but if you wanted to try butchering and you wanted to use birds you weren't attached to, this would be a good choice and cheaper than you could raise them, even conventionally.Their prices on everything are about the lowest I've ever seen anywhere. Both for the live birds and the products. For example they had the rooster booster no pick lotion for $7 when it's $12 everywhere else I've seen it.When I start adding to my flock again, I'm definitely going to go there to get some new breeds.

  • Also, wanted to add that I went back there today and bought 5 meat birds for $20 total. They are just under 8 weeks and ready to process.
    • So Rachel, how are you gonna pluck 'em? You got chickens? Ducks? Or are you just gonna skin 'em?

Yes, the gal there is very nice. Very knowledgeable too. She trained horses in her past, then opened up this store. That's where we got the turkey before. AND she took the turkey back after we had it one nite, because it was so noisy.

Does anyone raise turkeys here? I would love to be able to have an organic turkey for TG. However as Rachel said, you need two cause they get lonesome. [aka loud]

The Feedlot has a lot of birds. And we fed the baby lamb with a bottle when we were there.

Wish we could do a consortium where those that can't raise x, can contribute to the care of them and then we all have organic turkeys for TG. Anyone interested?
    • We plucked two and skinned the rest because plucking by hand takes so long. All in all I would say that the experience has sent my husband and I more towards the vegetarian/pescatarian path. It wasn't a rewarding experience for us like it seems to be for most people.
  • I have to add that this is a great place. I only live about 12 minutes away and although I have a feed store right around the corner from my house I try to make the extra trip because of the prices and because I want to support her business and make sure she survives as there is no one else in this part of the state that provides the service she does. I am not sure what issues you are referring to as whenever I stop in the store is clean and the animals look great. I have purchased several birds from her over the last 2 years and everything has been healthy and of high quality. I encourage everyone to make the trip to see this great store.
    • You're right Vanessa, when I re-read my post, my criticisms didn't read as I intended, so it's been edited. (In my head I was comparing the interior of the feed lot to the interior of the stock shop, my other favorite feed store. There is a difference, but it's not important to the quality of the store so not really relevant)
Thanks for adding this Vanessa, it's nice to know that someone who's been going there for awhile is so pleased with them. She was not there when I went to visit, but I have talked with her on the phone and she was incredibly helpful and nice.

Anyway folks, especially to those of you that are looking for rare breed chicks, go there and support them. I will definitely be buying feed etc from them and birds when I add to the flock. If it seems far, get some chicken enthusiast friends and make a field trip out of it. It's really nice when a family owned and operated store ends up being the cheapest place with the most variety.
