Shredded paper for nesting boxes

So we just shredded a bunch of old bills, work papers, school papers etc and now I have two garbage bags full. Is it ok to use them in the hen's nesting boxes? I read no colored ink or shinny paper and I wouldn't put any plastic from the envelopes either. Any other reasons not to? I hate to have to throw it all away.

Maybe compost it instead?

    • A fitting end for junk mail and bills. Thanks.
  • Kevin,

    How is the shred working?
    • Sorry about the delayed reply. Its working out great. The only weird thing is seeing out in the coup. I never really noticed the straw on the ground since it blends with the ground but the paper really stands out. The plus side is since most of the paper is white any droppings stand out instead of blending. It's much easier to see when it need to be changed.
  • I use it in the nest and in the bottom of the pen. Also, my understanding is that the colored inks these days are no longer toxic & are soy-based.
    • How about colored paper? Is it OK to use shredded/colored paper, or does that have toxic chemicals?
