  • I agree with Chris. I would bet on the chicken unless your chickens are babies. It's neat that you got to see a roadrunner at your house. I haven't seen one in the middle of the city in 20 years. One of my chickens ate a baby gecko this morning, it always makes me sad when they eat things I like having around. Chickens will also eat scorpions. The only thing I would worry about a chicken eating is maybe a rattlesnake (?) or something that's been poisoned. Someone I knew had been poisoning rats and one of her ducks ate too many of the poisoned rats and died.
  • It's good for them. I caught my chickens chasing each other over a tiny newborn bunny they had killed. They must have scratched it right out of its den. Sad, but an excellent fresh protein source. They pretty much picked it clean.
    • mine even kill birds that get into thier food and eat on them
    • I thought I read up on chickens enough, but I certainly missed some of this stuff.... interesting about the mice and birds! wow... ok - so here's one for ya. I live in a residential neighborhood with brick walls, so there are very few predetors around. Though there may be cats that can jump the walls, I have never seen one. But the other day, a road runner was up on the brick wall. He stayed close by long enough to let me snap some photos, but he sure was eyeing my birds, and they sure were watching him in a weird way! My dad says that a road runner may kill them as they are a predator bird. Do you think a full grown chicken could hold its own with a road runner (since some have been known to kill birds - probably smaller birds), or should I be concerned? I like my girls to free range as much as possible, and I have left them out during the day while at work so they can find cooler places in the yard - but now I'm concerned that the RR might come back and hurt them... ???
  • I can relate, one of our girls ate one the other day! It was a big one too. They are omnivores :)
  • I'm learning something new every day! :) Wow!
  • Believe it or not they will even eat mice! Yuck! I actually try to get their attention when I see a lizard, so they'll go after it.... it's perfectly fine, just more protein. :-) Once I managed to herd a lizard into the coop and they went wild trying to catch it. If you look on youtube and search "chickens mice", there are actually videos of them eating mice. I don't know if I would want to eat an egg from a chicken who dines on mice, it's seems gross....
  • Lizards are good for them! Full of protein.
