Goat Housing...

We are preparing to build a new structure for our dairy goats and I was wondering if anyone out there has any input regarding the ideal housing for our climate? Where I live (Yuma Foothills) it is very windy more often than not and I know they do not like to be "drafty". I will be building a 10x20' structure with a large outside pen.  I think we will be putting on a "lean to" roof with rafters open and screened for heat to escape.  I am concerned about providing adequate ventilation without being "drafty" and wonder how much "structure" I actually need.  The chickens have the Taj Mahal and I am hoping to get by with a little less (so is my husband!)  Thanks for any ideas!

  • Thanks everyone! We also need hay & feed storage so this must double as both. Nice to know they will do fine in something less than a palace :)

  • My goats have a 10x14 aluminum barn. (One of those Arrow brand structures) As long as they have some sort of shelter from wind, rain, and sun...it certainly doesn't have to be fancy.
    • For my 2 Nigerian dwarf does I found a 'Lil Tykes play house on Craig's List. It is the perfect size for them. I'm guessing that it would work for 2 regular size goats, but probably not three. These are often available on CL. My girls are most concerned with someplace to get out of the rain, they hate getting wet.

      Good Luck!
