Eggs for Sale (for eating)

I am not sure where this would go... so forgive me if this is the wrong spot!

My husband and I are new to this, and are considering adding a few chickens in addition to the garden I have in mind... purely for eggs. I know that there is a lot more to it than "what kind should I get"... but for now, I am going to focus on the garden, then the chickens. :o)

But, there is a sign outside of a house nearby that says "Fresh Eggs" near the driveway. Is it appropriate to just show up and ask for eggs? What should I know about getting eggs from a local family? I am thinking if I get my family used to the idea of eating local eggs, the chickens won't be so surprising!

  • Haha... I might have to make the trek out there ;o)
    • Thats a bummer.
  • Sure! Stop in and ask them about the eggs. If they're going to advertise, they better expect business :) I'd ask how often they're collected, are they fridge stored or room temp (not bad for them to be room, just don't want to go from cold to warm and back to cold), find out what they're being fed too. We've offered to open an egg for customers to see when they've "thought about" farm eggs vs store eggs.

Sneaky Tabitha... I like it! LOL
    • Thanks everyone... but it looks like they moved... I couldn't tell from the street, drove all the way up to the house to find it empty. :o(
  • If they have a sign out then it's appropriate for you to just ring the doorbell! You can ask them what they feed the chickens if you want, but they'll probably just tell you "chicken feed". If I were you, I'd be more interested in seeing the chickens themselves, if not just for curiosity's sake. If you explain to them that you're thinking of getting chickens and you just want to get some ideas for housing, they may not be so hesitant to let you in their yard.
  • Sure its appropriate, they have a sing out. Fresh eggs are great and can't compare to store bought.
