Egg laying behavior

I think that my Barred Rock might be laying her first egg. I found her in a planter I have NEVER seen her in before. She is making this little nest in a bunch of ground morning glory and has been there for a LONG time. She usually hangs out with the rest of the gals, so I am wondering if she might be trying to lay an egg. She is also grooming the area around her. I watch her pick off dead blooms and toss them aside. How long does the egg laying process usually take? Am I out to lunch, or is this behavior indicative of egg laying?

  • She laid an egg today!! It is a perfect, tiny, brown egg. Now I need to head out and pick up some layer feed!

    • dont forget some oyster shell it helps harden the shell
    • YAY! Congratulations! It looks just like mine. They are so pale and the shell seems thin on the first egg. It will get darker. Enjoy!
  • My hens always acted "listless" prior to their first egg. And it took a while for the egg to show up. It's so exciting though when you find it and to this day I am still excited to go out there and see if there's an egg. My little RIR laid her first egg finally early this morning. She has been a late bloomer. I found it on the floor, almost didn't see it, it seems that the first egg is always a faint color compared to how brown they become later, anyway, it was so pale it blended with the shavings. It had a small crack in it as well, but I'm just glad she finally started! Good luck with your hen!
  • Yes, this sounds like it to me. It could still be another week or so while she "practices", but I would really encourage the nesting boxes (I'm wondering if the nesting boxes might be too hot which would discourage her from using them). You want her to be as comfortable as possible, but you also probably don't want to go on a hunt every day for eggs.
    • Would you suggest that if I find her in the bush, I move her to the nesting box? She knows where it is, I have seen her in there before. But during the day, they tend to stay away from the coop. I think they would much rather be in the yard. I have fake eggs in both of the boxes.
  • Mine did that for a couple of days in our outdoor fireplace, then she layed an egg! You should see an egg very soon.
