Coyote Proof

I am just starting to build a ner coop. We live in the desert with no fence around our property. There are quite a lot of coyotes around. They don't seem to bother my parrots, but the parrots have a concrete floor and very sturdy wire walls. The coop will have dirt floors. My thought is to use 8 x 8 x 16" block in the ground, coming above the ground about six inches. Under the block, extending out about one foot will be more wire fencing to discourage digging. That wire will be 18" under ground. The block will all be grouted with concrete and rebar driven two feet or more into the ground. What do you think? Sufficient to keep them out?

  • Yotes try to dig into ours and never seem to dig more than 6 inches or so. Your underground fencing sounds great.

  • Ben sounds good - the only comment would be - use hog/horse fencing with the smallest holes you can get - standard chicken wire is way too light-weight.  Since you are out in the desert and possibly a good source for dinner for the coyotes, Sheri's note about a hot wire might be extra protection.

    • Yes, so right! Chicken wire keeps chickens in, but it doesn't keep predators out.  We've used both 1x1 and 1x2 fencing for coops. We currently have chain link around our pen.

  • That's a hefty digging barrier. We protected ours from dogs with a hot wire around the periphery of the coop.

  • There are other factors to consider. Such as how many dogs can chew through chicken wire if they are determined enough. One other measure you could consider is buying a can of wolf scent and spreading that around the coop. It will mark the territory as belonging to a wolf, and the coyotes will not dare cross that line.
