Chickens & house insurance

I have been trying to get some home insurance quotes and finding that once I say I have chickens they reject me. Has anyone else run into this problem?

The insurance I have now I have had for years (pre-chickens) I was just trying to get new and hopefully cheaper bid.

  • There is a current thread about this on backyard chickens. The insurance agent is quoted as saying "Chickens are highly combustible, and therefore are a high fire risk." It is getting a lot of laughs, along of course with concern about FARM insurance denying coverage if chickens are present. I have heard people mention it there in previous threads, though.

My insurance company has never asked me about my animals, and I have no plans to tell them, but even if I did, it would surprise me if they would be concerned. They do have an online form to fill out to reassess the coverage (presumably most folks would fill it out trying to reduce rates), and it says nothing about any animals.
  • Do they actually ask if you have chickens? I don't think I've ever been asked that by an insurance agent.
    • Yes, they ask about all animals and specifically ask about chickens among other animals.

I don't remember being asked before, but then I didn't have chickens then. Maybe it is new. But two companies have rejected me for it.
    • Do you mind telling which companies rejected you?
    • Fidelity today and then the other was a while back I believe it was one on Costco's website.
  • Weird, I wonder why. Ours doesn't know we have them, had the insurance first and didn't think they needed to know.
    • Yes I am not giving the information to my current insurance. They have never asked for an update on things like that. I asked why and they are considered exotic animals.
