Chicken nursing question

I hope that someone might tell me what to do for my hen next.  This morning, because of construction going on in my backyard, I shut my 4 hens intheir coop to keep them 'safe'  When I got home just after lunch, threeof them were dead and one in bad shape.  I put the last hen in mybathroom sink and ran tepid water over her bottom half for about anhour.  She is better now, perched on the edge of the sink, butlethargic.  She laid an egg with a leathery shell, cleaned her feathersfor a while, and ate a little bit of tomato seeds and pulp.  What shouldI be doing for her now and over the next days?

Thank you in advance,
Lis

  • Lots of water and keep her cool. She may not lay for a few days but she should be fine.

    Hope all goes well.
  • You're probably past the need at this point, but giving her some electrolytes would be helpful; pedialyte or even gatorade.
  • For a protein treat I like to give cottage cheese or unsweetened yogurt.

Sorry for your loss. Three dead hens in one day indicates you may need to rethink your coop design to allow much more airflow, shade, placement away from heat-radiating walls, vines for cooling, etc.

Now there's the new problem of only having one hen. They're very social creatures by nature and do not do well alone. If you purchase new hens they should be carefully integrated over a few months for a smooth transition or there will be too much stress and fighting in the flock. I use a large coop divider where they each have their own food/water and can see and hear each other until they accept each other.
