Hi everyone! My husband and I will be building our coop next weekend and after that is complete I will be ready to start looking for my chicks. I have decided that I want 3: a rhode island red, an easter egger (americana) and a cuckoo maran. I understand that the first two are fairly easy to come by at the local feed stores, but the maran is harder to find. Does anyone know where I could find a cuckoo maran locally? I would like to get all three at the same time.Kelly

Sounds like you've already got your chicks, but my neighbor uses the feedlot all the time and really likes them. I haven't used them yet since they're pretty far away.
I absolutely agree with this. My maran I got from mypetchicken, while a wonderful and friendly bird, lays eggs that are no darker than my rhode island red eggs. Since as far as I know there are no breeders in this area of the copper black marans, your best bet is to buy eggs from eggbid or ebay and incubate them... which I may do if there is enough interest in marans...
When we have gotten our chicks from the local feed stores there is no guarantee that you will get hens. The last batch of eight, which were suppose to been hens, 5 of them turned out the be roosters. So if you are particular on weather you get hens or roosters I recommend mail order. Mail order will guarantee them.
I would do mail order, but I only want 3 hens and each different breeds. I checked out the C & C hatchery in Queen creek and they carry all of the breeds that I want, but I will have to pick from a straight run. They did say that if I get a rooster, I can bring it back. But, that could be a serious hassle if I keep getting roosters!! Do you, or anyone, know of a mail order place that can send me 1 of each breed that I want?

go to craigs list and put in cuckoo maran i bought 3 chicks from this lady in mesa couple weeks ago
My pet chicken.com will. You are looking at a pretty significant shipping charge to get only three chicks, but it's worth checking out. :) If C and C carries the marans, you might want to think about buying 3 of them and then just taking back any roosters and keeping the females. Then you could buy the other two sexeed from the feed stores.
As a side note, feed stores get theirs from the same hatcheries we order from, so if you're buying pullets from the feed store, your odds are really the same as if you were ordering. It sounds like Peggy just had some extremely bad luck, or bought fancy breeds or bantams that were actually straight run and the employee misled her. Either way, that sucks.

Have fun with your new chicks.
