Water Kefir

I've been doing water kefir for several months and love it, as does my family. The last few weeks by grains seem to be smaller. They are still re-producing and the kefir is fermenting in good time, but the grains look more mushy in the bottom of the jar than they did before. When I purchased them, they were more like kernels. Does anyone else here grow kefir? If so, do you have suggestions about what might be causing this or what I can do to restore them to better health?

  • Thanks, Danica,

I've been using half bottled spring water from Sprouts and half mineral water. I decided to use regular brown sugar instead of organic to cut cost, but I'm questioning that choice and whether there is pesticide exposure. I bought some organic last night and mineral drops to use instead of cutting with mineral water. If they recover, I'll follow-up on this post. Thanks for the link!

  • Christy, I do not have experience with kefir, but I do a lot of yogurt.  I can tell you that you have to 'refresh' the starter from time to time.  I believe kefir is a similar type of culture.  It just kind of weakens, so you probably need to get a new culture.

    • Thanks, Catherine! I appreciate your advice. :)
