    I plan on looking at the Asian culture center to see if they have any sugar cane for sale to grow, if you folks know of any where else to find it please share thanks you for your help and info wonderful plant and info

      i can cut a stalk for you. no need to buy it. you can chew some then plant the rest lol.

    awh that's sweet. i'm sure the elephants love it. what else do you do with your sugar cane?

    sorry that was our august watering schedule right now the drip system is off, rain will take care of the garden for us. think all the plants are 10 mins every 12 hrs now.

      Krystal, mostly just admire it :-)  I do propogate it for re-sale at the farmers market, and still have not done the kabob skewer - just one of those 'have to' that I have not gotten to.  You cut the cane into pencil width pieces and use them as kabob skewers on the grill.  There is a famous Asian dish forming shrimp paste (with other things) around the cane/skewer and grilling, but anything you would kabob would work.

    the tropicals are first on the drip line, and during the summer we watered them 20 mins 3 times a day like everything else in the garden. but we made sure to put them on the side of the house. where they get some shade.

      That is a lot of water Krystal, or it sounds like it.  Right now the particular bed which includes asparagus and strawberries as well as lemon verbena and horseradish is flooded for (I think it is about 40 minutes) every 7 days.  Our sugar cane is in approximately full sun year round and has been for 3+ years.  BTW - we give some of the sugar cane to the Zoo for the elephants :-)

    here is a pic of the sugar cane it's about a year old, i grew it from a piece I bought at the Chinese cultural center market. it's pretty huge now, brown fence in back is about 5.5 feet tall. our very small 3 year old dwarf bananas are on the left and a pomegranate tree is on the right.

      Thanks for posting a pic. I think someone in my neighborhood has a big hedge of it. I'll have to take a closer look.

      Nice growth mass, Krystal.  I also grow one of the purple heirloom varieties.  If you have not tried to cut them they are VERY hard, at least the outer skin is.  The interior is very fiberous, and you probably know the leaves are knife sharp.
