Hello --this Larry and I live in west Phoenix between North 67th and Campbell Ave off of Indian School Road behind the Holiday Park Secondary Elementary School On West Roma Ave. I have 3 chickens--one a Rhode Island Red (Hortense), one a Domique Plymouth Rock (Henrietta) and one a White Leghorn (Gertrude). I am aware that when they get older the egg production slows down but Gertrude is this youngest and I am getting more eggs from Henrietta-the oldest than from Gertrude. Gertrude when does lay lays soft shelled eggs and this lay phase comes and goes. I do make sure their plenty of calcium in their diet like oyster shells mixed in their feed and adding calcium tabs dissolved in their water. I am also wondering if borrowing a neighbor's rooster for a while to be with the ladies to get thing cracking again as far as laying. There are times the hens will just sit for hours on the nest box and I am wondering if this is the maternal instincts kicking in. And I would love to talk to you about ladybugs--that I have bought from Baker's Plant Nursery but do not seem to keep them around.
