Hi Larry - Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for reaching out - I have not gone on the site recently. YES - A rooster could perk up your ladies : ) And it is normal for hens to get broody ( sit on eggs ) from time to time. Certain breeds do it more than others. As for the soft shells - usually oyster shell can help that out, if calcium i needed - but there are other factors that can infuence soft egg shells.
Thin egg shells can occur on hot days when the temperature rises. This is associated with a lower food intake and shell thickness will return to normal when the temperature drops and the food intake returns to normal. Sometimes stress ( other birds chasing them ) can influence shell softness. Also other vitamin/protein/mineral difficiencies can cause issues - depending on what they eat. Free range chickens usually have the least issues because of their varied diet and grit they consume.
