There are so many classes and events, you should enjoy learning to garden in the desert. If you become a volunteer you can take classes for free when you are the sign in person. I don't know how much time you have but it could be a good way to meet other members and get some good info. You usually get a good response if you post a question so don't be shy.
Welcome :) This site is full of great info. I also recommend the book Extreme Gardening by Dave Owens "The Garden Guy" It's been a great resource for us during our first garden.
Welcome. Quite the change in climate for your family, there are many member of the guild in Mesa. You may want join a another group in your area. Nice people, willing to help. Good luck.
