Looking for a composter

Hello everybody J

I am currently shopping for a composter and I am interested in your opinion. I am looking for the tumbler kind as I am kind of lazy and admit that I will not do the pitch fork method. Another positive side of the tumbler is that it can be moved as needed.

Here are the two models I am looking at:

1 - Envirocycle Composter  ($150)

http://www.amazon.com/Envirocycle-Systems-Composter-Black/dp/B000FCNH76

2 - And The Compact ComposTumbler   ($300)

https://www.compostumbler.com/StoreFront/product/compact-compostumbler

What I like about the Envirocycle one is that it collects the “compost tea” in the base. My friend owns #2 and loves it. I read many positive reviews on #1 but I don’t know anybody using one.

Of course, I am also open to donations if you have an old composter that you are looking to give away ;-)

Thanks!

  • QG - check out Costco. Right now (in season) they have a very nice tumbler for only $100. Here's a look.
If you have the space, I'd still recommend a plain ol' pile. It's quick and so convenient, and all you really need is a good shovel. I'm using 4 different composting devices/methods and I still prefer the pile. Even tumblers will be some work depending on weight of material settling, heat (yes, you will need gloves), ease of extraction (many are really inconvenient to simplicity). You may want to start with the recylced static bins from the city, then evolve. Maybe give some time to handling/accessing other models. (I spent $200 on a fancy schmancy high-tech composter which is really annoying - good, but annoying).
For simple compost tea, without getting too complicated, here's my simple technique without the need for a whole lot of stuff (the video is a bit raw).

Enjoy the process and have fun!

    • Oh wow, lots of info! Thank you so much :) I like the blog page too, i will have to look at it when I come home tonight. I ended up ordering the envirocycle as it seemed to fit our needs. Hubby went to pick up the city bins but was unhappy with it because bottomless. I thought it was perfect as is and suited the purpose but heh, not much control over the man sometimes. I figured I could keep putting stuff in the bin while the tumbler cooked a batch. I still think I need some kind of dual system

I might check out the one at costco and give it a try anyway, thank so much for posting a pic! very helpful. I'll see how much room it takes, backyard is kind of small. Nice thing about amazon and costco is that they both have easy return policy :)
  • thanks Chris, I will check with Casa Grande and if all fails, I think that 5$ for that bin isnt bad at all.
  • City of Phoenix sells these at their landfill transfer stations for $5

    • Oh neat!! Too bad I dont live in PHX itself, might have to find a way to work that out :) One of these bins would be perfect to collect things while the composter is "in process". Very nice and clean looking.
  • Check this one out. It's hand-made and a great deal at 69.99.

    • I didn't think of ebay! thank you much Kristi, this is very helpful :) I just wish I could go on ebay from work, they pretty much cut us off from the world :P
  • Try making a tumbler; I did. There are plenty of Youtube videos for instructions.
