animal hair

Can animal hair, such as cat or bunny hair, compost? I have two rabbits who shed like crazy and it would make me less irritated sweeping it up if I had a good use for it.Roy

  • I compost animal hair, dog hair from the grooming parlor, human hair-my own. Also put it in my worm farm. Breaks down slowly in both but the worms love it. Full of nitrogen so a very useful additive. One of my friends has a fox problem with his geese and has been using human hair from the hair dresser around his property to deter the foxes. Seems to be working!
If getting hair from outside sources check that they aren't using chemical treatments like perms.

  • if you have problems with rabits in your area it will also help to deter them from your garden
  • Yep, it's in the Greens (hair is protein, which is a lot of nitrogen). Check this site out!! http://www.compostinfo.com/main/intro.htm

  • Yep, animal hair is in the greens (proteins are high in Nitrogen) they say it is slow to degrade though!
