mourning the loss of my zucchini

Hi, I'm located at 94th Street and Cactus (sort of). Am I North enough for this group? I thought it would be fun to hear about what others in this area are doing.Today, while treating for an aphid infestation, I broke my long-lived zucchini, losing three soon-to-become zucchinis in the process. It's been with me for almost a year now. I am very sorry to see it go.Denise

    • I had a toad, but I accidently rototilled him last winter. Poor thing! I was thinking I had to wait until next summer to add another one, but maybe moving one while it's hibernating isn't a bad idea. Where do you garden? SCC as in Scottsdale Community College? How does that work?

    • Hi Anne,
thanks so much for offering your kids as toad hunters! :-) I'm getting ready to leave for the holidays, so can I take you up on it in January? I'd love to see the garden out there.
      Happy holidays all!

    • Hi Anne,
We're back home again. So is Monday the 12th is a good day?

  • You're north enough for me. I am over near Desert Ridge. I am new to gardening. Tell me about the aphid infestation. I have yellow squash that have dark spots under the leaves. These are clearly a bug of some sort. I almost posted a pic last month but decided that I would leave them alone since I can't see any distruction path, unlike the green caterpillars I keep discovering. I also didn't realize that a zucchini could live so long. I still have my Yellow squash, but I was waiting for it to die due to the cold, and didn't plant the zucchini that I love thinking it is not the right time. Please inform me......
    • This time of year about the only pest in the garden are black and gray aphids. They love squash and such like--my cucumbers are/were covered. I bought ladybugs, which helped some, then moved on to insecticidal soap. If you're not seeing dying, curling leaves, then they're probably not doing much damage. The green caterpillars are likely cabbage loopers, which are active in the winter. I used to be afraid to touch them with my bare fingers, but I've gotten to the point that I pluck them off and squash them between finger and thumb. Oh, and with aphids, I find that, if the infestation isn't bad, I can simple squash them against the leaves and that the dead aphid juice on the leaves prevents others from taking their places. It isn't the time for planting zucchini. You can seed them around Feb.

      Hope this helps!
