Unsalable Grocery Produce for Livestock

Has anyone had success in obtaining unsalable produce from your local grocer or farmer to supplement your livestock feed? I'm amazed at the volume that's wasted on a daily basis that I could put to use. That could feed poultry with any overflow getting processed by the red worms which will also occasionally feed the hens.I've had some occasional luck exchanging for eggs, but not consistent. Usually I'd get strange looks when I would ask, so I don't bother anymore. The only thing green in my desert yard for the hens are the occasional mesquite leaves when I trim. When the birds were getting more produce, their yolks were a beautiful rich, healthful orange.

  • I have tried at my local Basha's and at my local Safeway both, they both told me it's against store policy due to legal issues to let people have the produce. So into the dumpster it goes, to be wasted.

I have asked my local restaurant about picking up their scraps but I haven't heard back from them yet.
  • Yes I have had some luck with this, but also A LOT of people telling me no. I think some produce managers feel guilty that they throw out many hundreds of pounds of produce at each store every week and will help you out. The majority don't want to deal with the extra hassle or it's actually against store policy and must be thrown away(!!!). My suggestion would be to try a Bashas, they're in the middle of defending against a smear campaign so they might be more helpful than they would normally be. Just a thought.
  • Hmmm....something I had never thought about before. I LOVE THESE WEBSITE COMMUNITIES....SO INNOVATIVE.
A way to save money, save the environment and feed your family (animals) in the meantime. Couldn't we also use that produce for our compost bins??
  • I have. It took some doing to get the produce manager on the phone for my neighborhood Fry's but once i did he said I simply needed to come in at 7am to see what was available. It has worked well for me ever since. I think the trick is to go to the store you want to get the produce from early and meet them face to face and be charming...it should work out fine.
