thank you, chicken people

We made it past the first year mark. My cholesterol level is quite high now. We eat eggs in many different ways. The girls are fine, very healthy. Thank you to all of the chicken people who were so kind in answering all of the very silly questions, offering advice, providing support. It has just been so fun to have the chickens. My gardens are better, our food is better, the world is in balance. Lots of smiles.  :) Couldn't have done it without you.

Wish I could have goats...

  • Are you ready to show your 'girls' off on our Tour de Coops route? :) It's fun for those who are considering getting chickens to see what others have done and the progress that can be made in a year. May give someone the confidence to take that leap!

    • I did think of that. Here is my bias/fear that you could validate or help me see from a different perspective. I only have one access to my back yard, and the chicken area is across the yard on one side that has about  3 feet of walk by the coop area (even though the chickens would probably be out scratching in the yard somewhere). I worry that 1) one of the girls might get out if someone leaves the gate open or if it is open and several people are walking through at one time 2 ) one of my neighbors' cats might stroll in with visitors 3) my neighbors would see the sign in my yard and the traffic and say 'she's got what in her back yard?' and someone might turn me in because the coop is far enough from someone's house, etc. I have given eggs to several of the neighbors during the past year but have been sort of doing this on the down-low.
    • We have a "coop committee" that checks out all the coops ahead of time and goes over city compliance issues, parking, accessability, etc. If you are interested, but have some concerns, drop an email to info@tourdecoops.org and Bryan or Matt can answer any questions you have. Good luck!!!
    • Debbie, when does the Tour de Coops take place?
