Quail advise please

Hello - I've been doing bunches of research on raising Cortunix quail for egg production. I haven't decided if I'm jumping in as I want to make a well thought out and informed decision. A few questions remain.1. If my covered cage will be outside away from sun and partial wind, is there a outdoor temp point in which quail require lighting or heat bulb for warmth? In light of our recent cold nights I'm wondering id this is an issue.2. Does anyone here that have quail get eggs this time of year without artificial light? Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!

  • There are no temps low enough here for quail to need supplemental heating as long as they are dry and can get out of the wind.  That is assuming the quail are old enough to be fully feathered.  They can take temps much lower than ours, with the same stipulations.

No eggs without artificial light this time of year.  Or at least very very few.

I've found coturnix better than chickens for egg production, especially in the hotter months.

    • Very helpful. Thank you. If no artificial light, how long in weeks or months does production halt or slow way down?
    • I'm not sure because I've always used light to keep production up.
