Poisonous Vine or Friend for Summer Heat

I have received some Jicama seeds (Pachyrhizus erosus) and thought they would be beautiful for shading the girls coop. My research shows the leaves, flowers and pods are poisonous to humans, but I have not been able to determine if they are for chickens...? Is anyone familiar with this plant? Thanks for any assistance.

  • seen many backyard farms in the tropics with jicama and chickens raised together without having to separate them.

only reason a chicken might want to eat jicama leaves(in large amounts) is if the chicken is starving and has nothing else to peck on.

  • Hi Caren,

Like you I could not find any specific info on toxicity to chickens, however the main poison is rotenone and is used as an insecticide even on chickens to combat mites.  The list of animals which the leaves etc are toxic to include mammals and fish.

If it were me I would err on the side of not putting the vines where the chickens can get at them.  They could be fed the peels and cut up root.

    Hope that helps.
