One Free Healthy Egg Layer

Hello,
We just got 3 one-month old chicks to keep our only hen, Blacky, company, but the little ones seem to be uneasy with her.  We had to keep Blacky out of the coop and chicken run to let the little ones grow, but Blacky doesn't like that either.  She does not like the new arrangements and makes a lot of noise to get back in.  Since we live on a small plot in the city, we are afraid that our neighbors will complain to the city.

Blacky is about 2-years-old and lays eggs everyday in the summer and almost every-other day in the winter.  I don't know exactly what type she is (you can guess from the picture), but she is very hardy in both cold and hot weather.  She got along well with her 2 other adult chicken companions all last year.

Please let me know, if you are interested in adopting her.

Thanks,

  • Sure, Mina, good luck! Children can be very patient and forgiving. I am the mother of 2 boys I homeschool.
  • I will gladly take her...My flock of 13 is at 99 ave/ Lower Buckeye Rd. Anytime...I have had neighbors put stray chickens they found over my gate before! I have an assortment of hens and 1 rooster, but no Astralorp yet.The flock is VERY well cared for and tended to.
    • Hi DJ,

We have moved to a new place with very strict HOA rules and chickens are not welcomed.  Are you still interested in my Astralorp? You mentioned that you live at 99 ave/ Lower Buckeye Rd.  If you are still willing to take the chicken, could you give me the exact address for drop off?

      Thanks,

      Mina

    • Hello Mina,

If you find that you are without a home for any of your feathered friends, our family would LOVE to adopt one or all of them :) We have a large acre that our small flock runs around in during the day and a GREAT safe and secure coop for evening lock downs. Most of the chickens we have my daughter has hatched in her incubator, but a few we bought as baby chicks :) All of our chickens have names and personalities and we LOVE them all.... Feel free to contact me any time if you need to find any of your birds a new home :)

      Blessings,

      Kelly

    • Thank you so much for your offer!  It is great to know that someone could provide a good home for her.  I am going to give her a few more days however to see if she is accepting the new arrivals or not.  It seems like she has calmed down a bit, but you never know how she will adjust when they are all together in one coop or chicken run.  I will definitely keep your offer in mind.  My kids have been begging me to be a little more patient, because they really love her.
  • Sounds great. Let me do some research on how to introduce a new girl to the group and get back to you tomorrow. How do you transport a chicken?
    • I use a medium to large dog crate.

  • We have a hen like this. I think it is an astralorp. We call ours Batman (what can I say)? She is very good natured, an excellent layer, gets along well with the other girls, likes to be picked up and held. She also sings a very pretty 'lay song'. I hope you find a nice home for her.
  • Yes, I might be if my girls would be introduced well to her. I have never done this before but have been wanting to. Where in town do you live?
    • We live near LGO in Arcadia.
