If you don't have plans tonight and are looking to add to your micro-livestock family, take some time to go to the Maricopa County Fair's Small Stock Auction tonight.  Bidding starts at 7 PM and all animals (rabbits, cavies, poultry, pigeons, dairy goats and pygmy goats) are raised by kids involved in 4H/FFA.  You will surely spend more than if you bought the animals off Craigslist or from a hatchery or breeder, but it is a very worth while investment!

  • Brings back memories!  I auctioned off a rabbit through FFA when I was in 9th grade at the Maricopa County Fair.  It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun as well.  Part of the process is having the students send out invitation letters to get people to come and bid on your animal.  I recall the night of the auction there was a bad storm, so attendance was very low and most students were not able to recoup their investment in the animals.  However, shortly after the sale, I received a personal note and a check for $20 from Eddie Basha apologizing for not being able to attend the auction.   The $20 brought me darn close to break even, but I think I was more touched by his taking the time to write the note.
    • There was a few years the weather was bad :(  I totally support 4H and FFA and very proud to be an Alumni of them both.  I know I worked very hard with the animals back then and writing what seemed like never ending letters (hand written) to send out to buyers.  Fortunately, there has always been a core group of people that always helped pick up some slack when others weren't there.  Seems like yesterday to me, but was a long time ago!
