Marans and Blue Andalusian Chicks

I was at the Stock Shop today buying organic lay pellets. Anyway, they have Marans and Blue Andalusian chicks. I believe they are straight run if you don't mind a possible rooster. If you're into neat looking chickens or very dark brown Marans eggs more than the quantity they lay, these are neat birds. This place really keeps their animal area clean, too.

  • I have both of these birds. My blue andalusian is 3 years old and is no longer laying much at all, she is very skittish, and has a comb bigger than many roosters'. She doesn't care to eat from my hands but if I sit down and look away from her she pecks at my pants and any shiny things (buttons, snaps, jewelry) or freckles. Pretty quiet bird, economical eater and beautiful.
My cuckoo maran looks just like a barred rock and lays an egg just like one too (medium brown). Buyer beware about marans from feed stores/hatcheries, it seems that quite often you don't get the really dark eggs from them as they are more of a pet quality bird. That being said, mine is probably my favorite bird though, VERY friendly, curious and calm.

There's my two cents that nobody asked for! ;)
