Looking for a Butter Churn

As part of our pasture restoration program, we are using raw skim milk. This means we have some cream which needs to be put to good use. Does anyone have a butter churn we could use in exchange for some of the butter? Or is there a good place to buy a butter churn?

  • While I look forward to getting a manual paddle churn like those suggested (I like to have a manual and electric version of various tools), I have used my blender to make butter.  It occurs VERY quickly, so you have to be careful not to re-blend the butter into the buttermilk :]  I turn it on in 5-10 second bursts until the separation occurs.  I like the blender because I do not get the sloshing you get with the stand mixer--but I imagine there would be less if you have the splash guard.

Don't forget that ice cream is wonderful ...and so is whipped cream :] ...and homemade cream cheese (tastes great and without the other additives!) or any other homemade soft cheese.  There are several that do not even require added cultures--one is made by heating and then adding lemon juice.  Very yummy savory or sweetened.

    • Yes K is right about all the wonderful foods made with cream

. Maybe we should start sharing some raw milk/cream ideas. I just made farmer's cheese by heating the milk and adding vinegar. The curds that  resulted were lovely. i strained through a cheese cloth and did not even have to press. The left over whey will go into breads, and other cooking.

It tastes like cottage cheese, but not as moist.

Raw milk, pastured eggs, pastured meat- amazing foods!

    • Donna I think sharing ways and recipes for the cream is a grand idea.  The farmers cheese can also be made with lemon juice :-)

    • Thank you Catherine, I will try that.

  • This is fantastic information. I will post here on my first experience making butter.

    • The last time that I made butter in my kitchen aid, it took longer than i expected. So I walked away to visit with my husband. Soon, I heard a loud sloshing noise.  I returned to find buttermilk all over the wall. But the happy news is that the butter was done:) So just make sure to keep an eye on it.

    • You will enjoy making butter, Christie.  Be sure to completely rinse off the 'butter milk' so you have longer life of the butter, depending on how quickly you go through it :-)

  • Christie, in addition to Lehman's as Donna indicates you can sometimes find working glass jar/paddle churns at antique places.  I got lucky and got a working antique for $40 - usually they run from below $100 to $175 - just and FYI.

Here is the Lehmans link for churns - looks like their electric version is more expensive than Hoeggers.

Hoegger's offers an electric churn - pricey but they have great customer service.

  • I just use my Kitchen Aid mixer to make my butter.

    • I too use the kitchen aide.
