Local source for Cotournix Quail chicks?

Hello all-I was wondering if anyone is going to be incubating eggs and is interested in selling me a few chicks, or if anyone would recommend a local place that I could purchase chicks from? I've been doing a lot of reading and research and I would love to get a few of these sweet birds! Thanks so much-Kristin

  • I have a large space available for a brooder and am in process of building a cage outside. If you'd prefer to keep them until they are big enough to sex I'm OK with that (I've read they can be sexed at 2 weeks?) as I will need a little time to get things ready!

I'll send you a message with more details! Thanks so much!

    • I didn't see this post until just now. Two weeks is a bit early, they haven't gotten the chest feathers you need for sexing by then, some colors can be sexed as early as three weeks (browns and goldens), others cannot be sexed until you see them crow or get an egg from them several weeks later. I have all colors (brown, golden, a&m, rosetta and tuxedo). The brown ones are mostly spoken for by myself and another permie who are in the early stages of trying to start a breeding program to get a good new line of jumbo birds that lay jumbo eggs. I was planning on giving you a mix of all colors so you'd have some nice variety. If you'd like all white, I can give you that too, but I don't have enough extra to give you all browns.

I'm just brooding this batch in a cardboard box for the first week. You wouldn't believe how fast they grow!! They have already more than doubled in size, probably tripled and they're only 4 days old.
    • Rachel-

Sorry just saw this- I am not picky about the colors, and of course would be delighted to get a few different ones (it would help me tell them apart!) :) So don't worry about it- I am not picky! :) I am just excited to get started.

Thanks so much for your replies! I am looking forward to it!
  • Me. :) I just hatched some this weekend. How many are you interested in? I don't know how many extra I have, but I can always incubate another round, they only take about 16 days to hatch.
    • Oh my goodness! That is so awesome! :) I saw that you had sold your first round but I didn't know there was another! That is so exciting!

Yes if you don't have any extra I can always wait for the "next round" :)

I was thinking of starting small- say maybe 2-4 chicks? This is so cool- I would love to make some arrangements to purchase some chicks from you. :D (doing the happy dance!)
    • I can definitely spare that many. How big of a cage do you have? They are pretty awesome birds most of the time, but they can get very mean as well. I have had to separate out birds on two separate occasions when the hens got mad about something and tried to peck out the eyes of the roos. They are amazing layers-- I'm still getting about 5 eggs per bird per week even in this 110+ heat. They definitely need cool water to drink/stand in this time of year if you're going to keep them outside. If you are planning on keeping males, you should get at least 4 (1male:3-5 female) so the girls don't get too roughed up. The roos have a habit of pulling the feathers off the top of the females' heads while mating. If you just want females then just 2 or three would be fine. Obviously, they are not sexable at this age. :)
