How much space do chicks need?

Our 4 chicks are just 3 weeks old and we are amazed at how fast they are growing! We are using a large storage tub that measures 26" long, 19" wide and 16" high as their brooder and beginning to wonder if we should split them into pairs and use a 2nd tub.  We had thought keeping them together is better than separating and then later reuniting them when they are able to move into the coop. Are we being overly concerned about their temporary space constraints?

  • I concur with Becky. Right now the warmth is most important. They don't care if they have metal, wood, or cardboard walls, and even if they have more space, most of the time they hang close to each other.  :)

    • We have definitely noticed how they like to huddle together. Thanks so much!

  • They are probably fine in the tub but if you feel they are too crowded don't split them!  Integration might be too hard later.  If you have to, get a bigger box (cardboard is fine).  I use a big box with a screen over the top for my brooder.

You can also take them outside for a little supervised exercise during the warm afternoons.

They should be ready to move into the coop by 6 weeks or even sooner if you have a heat lamp out there.

    • We will scout for a larger container they can share and may also try that wheelbarrow method I read somewhere tonight so they can have some fun in the sun, very clever! Thanks!
